EDUC 645 Practicum I: Clinical Experiences in Reading Elementary (3)
Practicum I is designed to guide initial licensure candidates enrolled in the Reading Specialist Program to diagnose and develop interventions fro PreK-12 pupils experiencing literacy difficulties. Candidates are supervised as the assess (using multiple assessments) and teach two individual case study students considered at-risk for literacy success at two different levels using  a clinical model. They are also required to teach small and large groups of students at different grade and proficiency levels. Practicum I is supervised by both an on-site Massachusetts licensed Reading Specialist (the Supervising Practitioner) and a University Program Supervisor in candidates' schools or in summer school setting. Eligible candidates may choose to enroll in either Practicum I Elementary (EDUC 0645) or Secondary (EDUC 0646). Practicum I requires 150 hours. Candidates are not required to take any time away from full time teaching positions.

Students often struggle with motivation when they are assigned writing in school yet they write all day long on Snapchat, Whatsapp, text, or Twitter. How can we design assignments that tap into that enthusiasm for writing while also promoting research skills, complex thinking, and thoughtful writing? This course provides concrete approaches to teaching students rhetorical flexibility and research-based writing while also engaging them as writers for real-world audiences on current controversies, such as sexual assault or structural racism in the English classroom. We will focus on methods for teaching students to identify complex problems, pose fruitful questions, engage with sources, practice metacognitive reflection, engage in peer review, and write in varied genres for diverse audiences, including both public and academic audiences. Students enrolled in this class will complete a version of first-year composition (FYC) as if they were a student in a FYC course, analyzing their experiences through the lens of the course’s theoretical texts. Ultimately, students will be asked to create a version of this approach for the middle or high school classroom. This course is especially beneficial for teachers who are interested in the following: finding creative and exciting ways to integrate research-based writing and nonfiction texts into the curriculum, teaching students to use writing to solve real world problems, preparing students to write in college, creating a more inclusive classroom by experimenting with new methods of assessment, and increasing student engagement.
