Between the Canals2/2/12 BETWEEN THE CANALS: The Evolution of a Mill Town - The Enchanted Circle Theater will perform a dramatic stage reading of BETWEEN THE CANALS, a living history production that covers 160 years of American History by looking through the lens of the City of Holyoke. The audience is transported back in time, from present day Holyoke to the mid 1800's with a dramatic slide show. In vignettes that travel from Canada to New England, the audience witnesses the building of the 1000 foot dam across the Connecticut River, French-Canadian children leaving their family farm to work in the mills, Irish and Canadian children working 14 hours a day in a textile mill, a Labor Union meeting where they draft a resolution to improve working conditions, and Susan B. Anthony speaking from the steps of the new Holyoke City Hall. This dramatic reading from BETWEEN THE CANALS addresses many topics within the Massachusetts Curriculum frameworks, such as immigration, the Industrial Revolution, Unions, and Child Labor. This free event is open to the public and appropriate for students grades 3 and up (including high school, college, and adults), and schools are encouraged to bring their students. Public parking is available in the Church lot. If you plan to bring a group and will be arriving by bus, please contact Mary Thomson for parking information. The snow date is 2/9/12.  View Flyer [Color | BW]
