Goals: 2.5 Molecules and Ions
- Be able to determine whether a compound is a molecule or an ionic compound
- Recognize and explain molecular, structural, and condensed structural formulas
- Identify cations and anions
- Predict likely charges on main group ions
- Draw formulas for ions based on the numbers of protons and electrons in an ion
- List the number of protons and electrons in an ion based on the formula/symbol for the ion
- Know the names and formulas of the 17 polyatomic ions in Table 2.2

- Be able to determine the formula of an ionic compound when given the charges of the ions
- Be able to predict the formula of ionic compounds made from main group ions
- Be able to determine the charges of ions when given a formula
