ADMISSION FOR POST-BACCALAUREATE TEACHER LICENSURE

Postbaccalaureate Admission and Completion

Application to the postbaccalaureate teacher licensure program requires the following:

  1. Application and $30.00 fee (non-refundable)
  2. Two letters of recommendation (professional)
  3. Official transcripts with college seals and in sealed envelopes from all schools listed on the application
  4. Documentation of passing scores on the Massachusetts Communication and Literacy Skills Test
  5. Cumulative grade point average of at least 2.6 (inclusive of all post-secondary work)
Acceptance

Once the application has been reviewed, the student will receive a letter stating his/her status regarding acceptance from the Dean of the Division of Graduate and Continuing Education based on the Department Chair’s/Designee’s recommendation. Westfield State College is committed to educational access. Students are admitted with a 2.6 grade point average; however, a 2.8 is required for student teaching eligibility.

Program of Study

On acceptance into a teacher licensure program, students complete a program of study which will serve as a guide when determining future coursework. It is important for the student to complete a program of study with his/her advisor as early as possible in the program.

The program of study is the only approved curriculum for the student. Once filed, any changes to the program of study must be approved and submitted in writing by the advisor.

Eligibility for Student Teaching

Students must be matriculated and in good academic standing

dents must have 2.7 average in English Composition I and II. If the student has not achieved a 2.7 in those courses, s/he must achieve a minimum of 2.3 in ENGL0200 Writing for Teacher Candidates (3 credits).

Students must have an cumulative grade point average of 2.8.

Students must complete all prepracticum requirements.

Students must pass the subject matter portion of the Massachusetts Tests for Educators Licensure. Elementary, Early Childhood and Moderate Disabilities candidates must also pass the foundation of reading test. Each student is responsible for submitting documentation of passing MTEL scores for their official file.
