The spring sports season brought the following honors to the Westfield State Athletics Department and its student athletes.

Champs again

For the sixth time in 11 years, the department claimed the Smith Cup, representative of the best overall athletics program in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC).

National honors for track and field

The men’s and women’s track and field teams sent six student athletes to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championship, the Owls largest contingent to qualify since the early 1990s. Travon Godette ’16 earned the MASCAC’s Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award, while Naloti Palma ’16 was the league’s Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, marking the first time any MASCAC school has swept the two awards.

ECAC honors for softball

Women’s lacrosse earned a share of the MASCAC regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament, finishing with a 14-5 overall record. The Owls were rewarded with six all-conference players, and head coach Jeff Pechulis was named the league’s coach of the year and the sportsmanship coach of the year.

Women’s lax back in title game

Also earning ECAC All-New England honors were softball players Maddy Atkocaitis ’18 and Julia Sullivan ’17. Firstyear hard coach Colleen Bannister was named the loop’s coach of the year and the circuit’s sportsmanship coach of the year.
