John Gilbert ’79 was thrilled that Westfield State made it possible for him to take on an internship in his junior year at what is now known as The Washington Center in our nation’s capital.

To honor the legacy of Carlton Pickron, Ed.D., President Ramon Torrecilha, Ph.D, announced at the November 2018 anniversary gala a newly established Carlton Pickron Post-Doctoral Fellowship for Diverse Faculty.

As I type this, a winter wonderland has descended over western Massachusetts. Yet, I trust as you read this, there is hope that Mother Nature has delivered us the promise of spring. As the seasons change in our beautiful part of the world, so does the activity on campus.

Despite the headlines and scholarships that focus on and fund STEM-related curriculum and programs that serve as a pipeline to populate the most in-demand workforce needs, I caution us not to lose sight of the importance and impact of liberal arts and general education.

Carlton Pickron, Ed.D., had been a counselor for Urban Education for five years when he accepted Azanda Seymour ’92 into the program.

From the age of 11, Carmen Garner ’01 was on his own. Born in Springfield, he lost his mother to illness when he was young, and his father abandoned the family.
