Handout for Oral Presentation (10% of course grade)

English 108 Introduction to Film

Dr. Filas

Your oral presentation should last 15 minutes including your introduction and the screening of a segment of a film or films to support your analysis. The basic info about a film is required: year, director, cinematographer, editor, stars, and music, costumes, and other details as relevant to your analysis (see annotated example for History of Violence).

Your handout should be about 1 page (500 words), single-spaced, written explanation of how your film sample exemplifies your subject film criteria. You are required to apply film jargon, or film-specific terminology in your analysis, as a way of showing us how to apply the textbook ideas to real movies. So, please use the specialized language.

You must include analysis of one still frame in which you discuss matters such as the camera shot, the frame composition, color, lighting, costume, character, symbolism, and mise en scene.

You are required to credit the responsible artist for their work, not just actors and directors, but name also the director of photography/cinematographer, costume designer, editor, and so on as you discuss their work.

The final requirement is to be specific in your focus. My discussion of mise en scne above includes several examples, one of which would be right for a presentation, but not all in one presentation. That goes beyond what is required or most useful for the class.

Please arrive with your tapes cued up, or arrive early to cue up your dvd for your presentation. Be prepared on your assigned date or lose any guarantee of being able to present for this assignment.

ALL FILMS SHOWN IN CLASS MUST BE IN WIDESCREEN (NOT FULL SCREEN) FORMAT—IN THEIR ORIGINAL ASPECT RATIO!

No credit for handout without presentation being completed.
