THE ADDICTION COUNSELOR EDUCATION (A.C.E.) PROGRAM:

If you are considering a career in treatment services for alcoholism/chemical dependency, or if you are working in a related field, this program's course work and practicum experience will serve as a valuable introduction to all aspects of the addictions field. Each course is designed to provide you with knowledge and skills required for working in the addictions field. If you are working in the field of alcoholism/chemical dependency and are not credentialed, you may need certification or licensure in the near future. However, you do not need a college degree, nor do you need to be working in the addictions field, to participate in and benefit from the program.

Alcoholism/chemical dependency treatment service agencies are an important element in our nation's health care delivery system. The Addiction Counselor Education program assists in the professional development of people wanting to be involved in this important and growing health care service field. All courses are taught or supervised by professionals in the alcoholism/chemical dependency treatment services field.

This program is available as a one-year certificate program.  Individual courses may also be taken by those who do not need certification. Classes are conveniently offered on evenings and weekends.  A Certificate of Completion is awarded to those individuals who successfully complete the core curriculum in its entirety (five courses, pre-practicum, and practicum). Courses begin each September at Westfield State University. The program is also offered in Worcester at AdCare Hospital beginning in September.

PHLEBOTOMY:

Do you enjoy working with people?  Are you looking for a rewarding career that is in demand?  If you enjoy making a difference in the lives of others, a career in Phlebotomy may be for you!

Professionally trained phlebotomists play a vitally important role in the delivery of health care.  In hospitals, clinical laboratories, physicians’ offices and blood donation centers they are responsible for obtaining blood specimens by venipuncture and micro techniques, verifying records and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis.  To do this well and efficiently they must possess strong technical, organizational and interpersonal skills.

This non-credit course prepares students to accurately, safely and reliably perform venipuncture and capillary puncture in order to collect and transport blood specimens for diagnostic procedures and clinical laboratory analysis.

Our low student to instructor ratio allows for individualized attention, fosters an exceptional learning environment and promotes mastery of necessary skills.  Our 80 hour program is completed over a ten week period and includes exceptional classroom instruction, extensive practical application, and a clinical rotation.

Those who satisfactorily complete this program will be prepared to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) exam enabling them to seek employment within the United States.

HR CERTIFICATION PREPARATION PROGRAM:

This 36-hour course is intended primarily for individuals who desire HR certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) or Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).  The content provides practical, “real-world” information about each of the major functional areas of human resource management as well as recent legislative changes affecting today’s HR professional.  This course is offered in partnership with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and leverages the SHRM Learning System.  Year after year, professionals who use the SHRM Learning System to prepare for certification exams consistently surpass the national pass rate.
