“Three Little Pigs” Performances Slated for Oct. 28 & 29 at Westfield State University

Westfield- Westfield State University Music Theatre students will perform their curricular project, the opera “Three Little Pigs,” on Friday, October 28 and Saturday, October 29. Students will present three performances over the course of the two days on Dever Stage in Parenzo Hall on Westfield State’s campus. On October 28, 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. performances are open to Westfield Public Schools students will limited public seating. On October 29, a 4 p.m. performance is open to and geared toward the general public.

Associate Professor of Voice and Music Dr. Mary Brown-Bonacci said the opera will particularly resonate with the elementary school audience as it has a great message about reading and gaining knowledge and includes “lots of silliness.”

The performance will use humor to retell the story of “The Three Little Pigs.” The opera is written by John Davies, of Opera Tales, who designs operas for young audiences to encourage an interest and enthusiasm for literature and music through musical theater. This tale will be told with the music of W. A. Mozart, extracted from his operas “Don Giovanni,” “Magic Flute,” and “Le Nozze di Figaro.”

“Our students are putting together a delightful performance that will not only expose audiences to Mozart, but will also showcase the skills and scholarship of music students,” said Bonacci, who organized the performance.

The two opera performances on October 28 are outreach shows for the young audiences of Westfield Public Schools. The students’ field trip is made possible by a Local Cultural Council grant.

All performances are free, but donations to Volunteers in the Public Schools (VIPS) are welcome.
