Westfield State University appoints new chairs of Biology and English Departments

Two accomplished Westfield State University professors have been appointed to chair two of the University’s academic departments. Associate Professor of Biology David Christensen, Ph.D., will lead the Biology Department and Professor of English Stephen Adams, Ph.D., will head the English Department.

Dr. Christensen has served the University since 2008, when was appointed as an assistant professor of biology, and promoted to associate professor in 2014. Using his education and experience in aquatic ecology, Dr. Christensen has published and presented widely in his field.

On campus, he has facilitated numerous ecological research projects with students and fostered various technical reports to outside agencies, including many for the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Wildlife, Division of Ecological Restoration. Dr. Christensen has also advised 19 student group research projects presented at undergraduate symposiums during his tenure.

Prior to his arrival on campus, he was a graduate teaching assistant and post doctorate research associate at Washington State University, after beginning his career as a fishery technician with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and later serving as a senior fisheries technician with the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Colville Confederated Tribes.

He earned a B.S. in fisheries resources from the University of Idaho, an M.S. in environmental science and a Ph.D. in natural resources sciences, each with an aquatic biology emphasis from Washington State University.

A member of the Westfield State University faculty since 1995, Dr. Adams began as an assistant professor of English. He was promoted to associate professor in 2001, and to full professor in 2006. In addition to his appointment as chair, he serves as both the graduate coordinator and graduate advisor of the English Department.

Dr. Adams also spent two years as interim dean of the faculty and an additional two years as the faculty’s dean. He has faithfully served the institution through numerous committees and chaired the University’s Honors Program for seven years. He has published and presented widely in his field and maintains several professional association memberships.

He arrived at Westfield State after teaching and serving as an academic advisor at the University of Missouri. Dr. Adams holds a B.A. in English from Missouri State University and both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Missouri.
