Construction Project Timeline 2008-2014

2008
Division of Capital Asset Management’s (DCAM) bond issue for up to $33 million for the construction of a new academic building

2009
Campus Housing Survey conducted. Overcrowding demands need for additional student housing. Survey outcomes inform space planning including need for more academic space

The campus in cooperation with DCAMM completed work to construct a new main entrance to the Ely Library Campus Center Building and installed a full-service accessible elevator to access all floors and upgraded two other elevators located in the building. 

June – School Committee of the City of Westfield and Westfield State agree to extend the City’s use of Juniper Park School to June 30, 2012

September

  • Ely Campus Center renovations include upgrades to Communication department services including new TV and radio station studios, renovation to Arno Maris Gallery
  • Modular structure leased to provide additional office and classroom space
  • The CENTER for Teacher Education and Research, which is staffed by four employees of the university closely connected to K-12 readiness, moves into a Juniper Park School second floor wing and occupies three classrooms and two office areas

2010
September

  • Dedication for Banacos Academic Center, a newly renovated space for students with learning disabilities. The cost is $1.3 million
  • Teacher and general education core classes begin in Juniper Park School

October - Campus Master Plan updated and presented to Board of Trustees. Stands as comprehensive assessment of university priorities and space for next 5 to 10 years

2011
Summer - Upgrades completed to the Student Health Center and Residential Life offices

September

  • University completes large-scale renovation to the dining facility. The building is now called the Tim & Jeanne’s Dining Commons. It is home to the Father Dean Dining Hall, the Tekoa Room and Pandini’s. Tim & Jeanne’s now seats approximately 300 more students, has expanded to 39,000 square feet and has new 16 foot windows that look out over the campus green
  • Lansdowne Place in downtown Westfield opens with 216 student occupants for 2011-2012 academic year

October - Westfield State University Board of Trustees formally voted to undertake projects with a total capital cost of $73.8 million – the largest capital commitment in the history of Westfield State

2012
January - Westfield State Foundation sells 27 Washington Street to University Housing, LLC for $500,000. The Foundation purchased the building in 2006

February– Renovations to library in Ely Campus Center completed

May – Ground breaking for new student housing complex. The MSCBA selected architectural firm ADD, Inc. is selected to design the building. Construction to be completed by Walsh Brothers Construction. Project to employ between 60-100 workers throughout the building process

Summer of 2012 – the CENTER for Teacher Education and Research moves back to the main university campus from Juniper Park School and the Department of Nursing takes its place in the school.

September

  • Ely Campus Center Renovations continue with expansion of the Wellness Center to 14,000 square feet on two floors, renovation of the mezzanine section of the library, and the re-organization of student space in the basement takes place along with construction of  an outdoor patio and a full-service Dunkin Donuts.
  • Improvements completed to the Apartment Complex, which includes Conlin, Welch and Seymour Halls for a cost of $2.5 million

2013
January - Renovations to Ely Campus Center are unveiled including addition of new wellness center and renovation of garden level with new patio entrance, student government and club facilities and full-service Dunkin Donuts. Total cost for 2012 Ely renovations is $12.3 million

April – Westfield State agrees to extend existing agreement with the School Committee of the City of Westfield for the use of Juniper Park Elementary School through June 2015

September – Official opening of University Hall, which houses 410 beds in semi-suites located at the northwest corner of campus. Project proceeded on-time and on-budget at $55 million

2014
Summer - Air conditioning is being installed in Bates and Parenzo Halls; Davis Hall is receiving its first renovation in more than 20 years; Scanlon Banquet Hall, one of the most highly trafficked spaces on campus, is getting a renovation; The Athletic Storage Facility and main entrance to alumni Field is getting a face-lift.

September - Ground breaking scheduled for new Science Center with estimated cost not to exceed $33 million per 2008 bond

2015
June – Juniper Park Elementary School is scheduled to revert from the City of Westfield back to the university. Renovations to Juniper Park are scheduled to begin in Summer 2015 to prepare for university use.
