The Public Affairs Office offers an internship each semester for up to two students. The Public Affairs internship is an opportunity for outgoing, personable, proactive, bright students to learn valuable skills that can be applied to any field. Interns meet in the office an average of eight hours per week and work hand-in-hand with the Public Affairs staff with the expectation he or she will contribute fresh ideas, hone business writing skills, and learn the practice of public relations.
Interns can expect to develop strategic planning, interpersonal communication, and networking skills. In addition to partnering with faculty and staff members, interns will also have the opportunity to work directly with local media.
Who should apply?
The Public Affairs office internship is offered to all majors, but a strong familiarity with the public relations or journalism field is necessary. Excellent writing and editing/proofreading skills are required.
How and when to apply?
Interns are chosen at the end of each semester to work for the following semester. If you are applying for a spring semester position, please apply by November 1st. If you are applying for the fall semester, the deadline is April 25th. Interested students are encouraged to consult with a faculty adviser before applying. All applications should include an updated resume and three (3) writing samples: ideally a general news press release, a feature story, and a social media grab from a professional or personal blog, website, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook post. To apply, email Troy Watkins.
