The Office of Non-Discrimination Compliance

In 1839, Horace Mann founded Westfield State University as the first public higher education institution without barrier to race, gender or economic class. During the post-Civil war period, Westfield became known for educating freed African-Americans.

Today we continue to honor our history by recruiting students, faculty and staff whose range of lifestyles, cultures, talents and global perspectives enrich Westfield’s academic and community life.

Westfield State University is committed to building a culturally diverse faculty and staff dedicated to teaching and working in a multi-cultural environment. A tradition of opportunity for more than 175 years: the University continues to be open to all regardless of class, gender or race since Westfield’s founding, and distinguished by educating freed African-Americans in the post-Civil War era. The University strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities.
