Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president in 1860.
After he was elected seven states left the Union to for the Confederate States of America.
It was at this point that the Civil War erupted as Lincoln wanted to keep the Union so he promised to enforce the laws of the United States and bring back the states  that left.
The war lasted for 4 years and over 600,000 people died.
Half way through the war he issued the Emancipation Proclaimation which freed all slaves in the Confederate States. It changed the war into a battle for freedom.
He was the United States first Republician president.
