Lesson Plan

Unit Topic or Theme: Geography
Grade: 3rd
Lesson Topic or Theme: New England states and their capitals
Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to identify the different capitals of all the states in New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut).
Instructional Technique: Discussion, worksheet, interactive website
Instructional Materials: PowerPoint, website and worksheet.
Theoretical Perspective: This lesson is important because students can learn the capitals of our country in small groups in comparison to all at once. It allows them to complete the activity more effectively.
Procedure:
A. Introductory Activity: Class will begin with a PowerPoint presentation by the teacher that shows all of the states in New England with their capitals, and a brief history about each state. Then the class will be given a worksheet, followed by the online activity.
Step by Step:

B. After the worksheet is complete, the students will work individually on computers to complete the online activity. The students will go through each question, identifying the capital of that state. If they get an answer wrong, it will tell them so and bring them to the previous page. After the online activity is completed, the student will raise his or her hand and the teacher will go around making sure each student has completed the activity.

Closure: At the end of the lesson, there will be a class discussion to see what everyone liked, or what they did
not like about the online activity. The teacher will go through all the states from New England and ask the class
what the capitals are. A worksheet will be given for homework to make sure the students learned all of the
capitals.

Adaptations:
Because every child learns at a different pace, the teacher will walk around the room evaluating everyone as the complete the online activity. If a student seems to be having trouble the teacher will help them. If the majority of the class is having trouble, the students can be partnered up with someone and they will work together to complete this task.

Homework: A worksheet will be given out that has a map of New England. The states will be blank, and the students must fill in the names of the states and their capitals. This homework assignment will show the teacher if the lesson was effective and that the students learned what they were supposed to.

Evaluation: The objectives of this lesson are for students to be able to learn and identify all of the states and their capitals from New England.
