Education Certification & Licensure

Initial Massachusetts Licensure, requires students to complete approved programs in teacher education and to pass the Massachusetts Teacher Education License Test (MTEL) in both communication and literacy, and in a specific subject area knowledge. The Foundations of Reading test is required for students seeking early childhood elementary and special education certifications. The Education Department at Westfield State encourages all students to take the initial course offerings in education. However, those who seek advanced standing in our programs must meet the following requirements:

  • English Composition I & II grade point average of 2.7
  • Completion of 57 credits
  • Overall GPA of 2.6
  • Passing grade on the MTEL Communication and Literacy Test

Students who have attained advanced standing must fulfill the following requirements in order to complete their programs and attain a license: 

  • Passing grade on the MTEL Subject Area Test & Foundation of Reading Test (if required
  • Overall GPA of 2.8 (including transfer credits)
  • Sucessful completion of an appropriate practicum*

*Students may apply for practicum only if they have fullfilled all of the other requirements.
