Student Activities

Student National Education Association
Membership in the Student National Education Association is open to all Education majors at Westfield State.  The National Education Association (NEA) is the largest educational professional organization in the country.  The organization on campus is also in conjunction with the Student Education Association of Massachusetts (SEAM).  Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, SNEA offers teacher candidates many leadership opportunities.  The following are some regular activities of the Westfield State University student division of NEA.  SNEA students:

  • Organize and participate in annual state-wide SNEA conferences.
  • Participate in the annual "Read Across America" program.  In 2007, students traveled to New York City.  The trip included a visit to the "Today Show", and  public readings at the New York City Library.
  • Volunteer and fundraise for the Special Olympics of Massachusetts.
  • Host "Teachers and Tea", a social event for Education Department faculty.
  • Organize and participate in an Adopt-A-Library Program.  In 2009, students donated time, money and supplies to the Pine Point Branch Library in Springfield, Massachusetts.
  • Provide Mentor/Mentoree Program for students.
  • Provided a Professional Development conference for Education majors at Westfield State University two years in a row.
  • Organized the first state-wide Outreach to Teach in Massachusetts.
  • Attend regional and national Education Association Conferences.

Kappa Delta Pi
An International Honor Society in Education, is committed to recognizing excellence and fostering mutual cooperation, support, and professional growth for educational professionals.

The Iota Iota chapter was installed at Westfield State University in 1960. Since then the chapter has recognized eligible undergraduate education candidates based on grade point average (3.3), junior or senior status, and their service to professional ideals and community service. The motto of Kappa Delta Pi is "So To Serve, So To Teach, So To Live". The chapter elects and initiates an executive board each year, currently has two faculty advisors, and conducts an annual initiation brunch in the spring semester, honoring new and current members and their families.

Our current projects include raising money to support literacy materials for children in Costa Rica, raising money and walking to support Autism Research, a Book Bingo at Highland Elementary School, and participating in a variety of other volunteer opportunities in the local school district. One of our long term service projects has been volunteering time and providing literacy materials at the Treehouse community for foster children and their families in Easthampton, MA.
