Ethnic & Gender Studies

WHAT MAKES US GREAT

A unique interdisciplinary curriculum-- emphasis on intellectual rigorous scholarship coupled with field work in community activism and social justice -- dedicated faculty and a real sense of community among students, faculty and staff.

The Department of Ethnic Gender Studies is one of only a few such multi-disciplinary departments in New England and the first of its kind in the Massachusetts state system. The department offers a major in Ethnic and Gender Studies and a minor in Multicultural and Ethnic Studies as well as a minor in Women and Gender Studies. The program provides a theoretical and historical analysis of power and oppression in the United States and globally.  We provide students with the opportunity to explore any number of thematic areas such as African American Studies, Latino/a Studies, GLBT/ Queer Studies and Post Colonial Studies with an emphasis on the intersection between all of these areas.

Majors:

  • ETHNIC AND GENDER STUDIES

Minors:

  • Ethnic Studies
  • Women and Gender Studies

What the future holds:

EGST majors become college graduates with specialized skills in cultural diversity, as well as skill to perform in-depth study of ethnic identity, cross-cultural literacy, and which give them a competitive advantage in the global labor market. Students are prepared to pursue employment in journalism, radio and television, health and community organizing, a variety of positions in federal, state, and local government and graduate studies in social sciences and the humanities, law, cultural and literary studies, education, public and social policy, counseling, public health, social work, and gender and ethnic studies. Majors in Ethnic and Gender Studies also become part of critical intellectual and committed citizenry who volunteer and participate no matter what their chosen profession.
