Top Ten Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the standards for getting in to Westfield?

Standards vary from year to year, from program to program and are different for first year students and transfers students.

  • Submit application, application fee, transcript with first quarter senior grades (or final transcript for transfer students), college transcripts (transfer students only), and SAT or ACT scores (required for first-year students and transfer students with fewer than 24 transferable credits).  No essay, recommendations, or interview required.
  • WSU requires 16 high school college preparatory academic units and follows a sliding scale that compares a student’s recalculated high school GPA to their SAT/ACT scores (for detailed information regarding units, sliding scale, and exceptions to those standards, click here).
  • Transfer students will have their college GPA and courses evaluated in addition to their high school GPA. 

2. What is your average high school GPA and SAT/ACT score?

Average high school GPA is a 3.15. The average SAT score is a 1040 (Critical Reading and Math sections only) and the average composite ACT score is a 22.

4. How do I apply and what are the deadlines?

Students can apply either online or with a paper application.  We encourage students to apply online so they can track their own application status.

Deadlines:

Fall Applicants:

  • The freshman application filing deadline is March 1
  • The transfer application filing deadline is March 1
  • The deadline for nursing is February 1

Spring Applicants:

  • The application filing deadline is November 22

5. How many students attend Westfield State?

Approximately 4,500 undergraduate students attend Westfield State (5,500 including graduate and continuing education students).

6. How many students receive financial aid?

Approximately 80% of our students receive some type of financial assistance.

The most popular majors at Westfield State are Education, Criminal Justice, Business Management, Psychology, and Communication.

8. What is your student to faculty ratio?

Our student to faculty ratio is 18:1. 

9. Do you offer any athletic programs?

Yes, WSU has 21 NCAA Division III teams, as well as an extensive intramural program and several club teams.
