Sample Lesson Plan

Unit Topic: Add and Subtract within 20

Grade:2

Lesson Topic: Subtraction

Lesson Objectives:
Given the website provided, the student will be able to solve subtraction problems using mental strategies already discussed in class.
The student will have less than 10 incorrect answers.

Instructional Techniques:
Students will work independently to complete the website activity. Students will work independently to complete assessment. Students will work in a group, as a class, to complete the closing activity.

Instructional Materials:
    Website: http://www.fun4thebrain.com/subtraction/pizzaSub.swf
    Work sheet: Pizza Pizzazz Subtraction
    Subtraction Assessment Worksheet
    Large Color by Numbers Picture
    Crayons
    Pencil

Theoretical Perspective:
This information is important for the students so that they will be able to easily make
mathematical computations. Subtraction is one of the basic skills of math. It is necessary for
students to learn this area of math so that they may understand all math in the future. It would
be very difficult to do mathematics without this skill.

Procedure:
    1. Show students the website homepage
    2. Explain to students the back story to go along with the website. The back story is this:
Morris the Mouse owns a pizza parlor. He is very busy and needs your help serving his customers. Can you help him deliver the pizzas to the correct tables?
    3. Give students instructions on how to successfully navigate the website.
-First have students click on the "Start" button on the homepage
-The next page consists of pizzas with numbers and number groups representing the
subtraction facts to practice. Have students select the grouping 1-5.
-When the page is opened, there will be a pizza parlor scene consisting of a pizza with a subtraction problem next to it on the counter and four tables with possible answers to the equation. From here the students must drag the pizza from the counter to the table that shows the correct answer.
-The number of correct and incorrect answers is recorded on the bottom of the page.
-Tell the students that once they finish a group of numbers, they must record their number or "Correct" and "Wrong" math problems on the handout provided by the instructor.
-Explain that once the students have finished the answers in that group of numbers, clock on the pizza at the bottom of the page that says "Play Again?"
        - Students should repeat the process until they have completed all three groups of numbers.
4. Hand out the Pizza Pizzazz worksheets and allow students to complete work on the website.
5. After all students have finished, collect  completed worksheets and allow them to move back to their desks.
6. Explain Math Assessment worksheet.
-The math assessment is a timed worksheet that all students are required to complete. The students have a minute to correctly answer as many subtraction problems as they possibly can.
-Once instructor has finished explaining the procedure, they should pass out the assessments.
-When they are all ready, say start and start the timer.
-Tell the class when time is up and to put down their pencils.
7. Collect assessment and allow room for questions.
8. Explain Closure

C. Closure
    1. Show students large balloon color by numbers poster.
    2. Explain how color by numbers works:
-Fill in the answer and the corresponding color is colored in
    3. Go around the room asking for answers to the subtraction problems.
    4. Whomever answers the subtraction problem correctly may go up to the picture and color the correct area.
-Repeat this process until entire picture is colored in.
    5. Hang finished poster on the wall.

D. Adaptations for different learners
        1. Read all directions out loud carefully
        2. Allow for questions at every point in the lesson
        3. Allow the option for students to work together on the website as long as they both  complete the assignment and turn in their own worksheets.
        4. Allow students who need it the option of taking the assessment orally or provide them with extra time.

Evaluation:
Given the website provided , the student will be able to solve subtraction problems using mental strategies already discussed in class.
       - This objective will be met by the completion of the assessment worksheet given after the work on the website is done.
The student will have less than 10 incorrect answers.
-The Pizza Pizzazz handout will let us know if this objective is met.
