Unit Topic or Theme: Math-Counting Money
Grade: Third
Lesson Topic or Theme: For
this lesson we will be using math, mainly addition to teach the
students how to count coins.
Lesson Objectives: The
objectives of this lesson are to make sure that the students can
properly distinguish the correct names of the coins.
As well as to be able to add the coins together accurately in
order to win bingo.
Instructional
Technique: To start this lesson off we
will have a classroom discussion where we will ask the students
to tell us everything that they know about coins. We will
be looking to see if the students can tell us things such
as the correct name of each coin, what coins are used for and
what happens when you add different coins together.
Once our class discussion has come to an end we will ask each
student to complete a short money based word problem worksheet.
After the students have completed the word problem handout and
it has been looked over by one of us.
The students will be able to log on to a computer and begin to
play money bingo.
Instructional Materials:

Theoretical Perspective: The
Information the students will be learning in this lesson is very
important, because it provides the students with skills that are
used in day-to-day life.
We believe that this information will not only help them to
learn more about money but will also improve each student’s
ability to use addition.
Procedure:
A.) To introduce this
lesson to the class we will have a classroom discussion based
around what is it the students already know about coins.
During this discussion we will be writing down each idea that
the students say on the whiteboard. Once each student has gotten
the chance to speak we will then go over their ideas as well as
provide them with new information that they did not mention
during the discussion.
As soon as the classroom discussion is over we will explain to
them what it is we will be doing for the rest of the lesson.
B.) Step 1: Once we
have finished our classroom discussion we will ask the students
to fill out a coin counting practice worksheet which has a total
of three money related word problems.
Step 2: Once each
student has completed the worksheet we will look it over to make
sure that they have gotten each problem correct.
If the students get a problem wrong we will work with them until
they get the problem right.
Step 3: After the
students have completed the practice worksheet and it has been
checked they will be allowed to get a computer and log onto the
internet to the money bingo website given below.
Website:
http://www.abcya.com/money_bingo.htm
Step 4: As soon as
the child gets on to the website they should create there own
bingo board.
We would like for them to start with a 3x3 bingo chart that ask
questions on just pennies and nickels.
Once the child has completed this bingo game and
gotten an 80% completion or higher they will be allowed to
move on and make a bigger bingo chart with different types of
coins.
Step 5: With the last
10-15 minutes of class ask the students to log off of their
computers and to put them away.
Once all of the computers are put away we will pull up the money
bingo site and project it on the board.
Once the site is up as a class we will make a 5x5 bingo chart
using all of the coins (pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters).
As a class we will then play money bingo for the remaining class
time.
C.) To conclude the
lesson we will project the online money bingo game on the board
so the entire class can see.
Once we have created a new bingo game on the website the class
as a whole will work together to try and win money bingo.
D.) When
it comes to the adoptions for different learners we have decided
that it would be best that throughout the lesson they would be
allowed to use a smaller bingo chart.
Once these students
have completed one money bingo game on their own they will be
allowed to work with a partner if needed.
We will also provide them with small bags of actual coins along
with scrap paper to help them be able to physically count out
the coins.
E.) For homework we
will be providing each student with a coin word problem
worksheet.
We will be looking for the students to use this homework
assignment to help them practice how to count and add coins
together.
Evaluation:
A.) Our first objective is that students will be able to properly distinguish the names of coins. We will be able to assess this through our practice worksheet and homework.
Our second objective is
that students should be able to add coins together and get the
correct number. We will be able to assess this by looking at
their final percentages on their games.
Also by looking at their sheet they filled out and seeing how
many times it took them to add the coins to get it correct.
B.) When it comes to
teaching this lesson we have come across a few concern. One of
the main concerns that we have is that we may not have enough
time to complete the entire lesson.
We would hope that we would be able to teach the entire lesson.
If we cant we are nervous that some students may seem lost if
the lesson needs to be broken down into two or more days.
We are also concerned that the money bingo game itself does not
state the names of the coins it only states the amounts. This is
concerning because one of our main
objectives of this lesson is to teach students the proper names
of each coin. Our final concern is that if the students begin to
get frustrated with the money bingo game
that they will begin to guess the different amounts until they
get it right.
