Unit
Topic
or Theme: Science- Motion
Grade Level: 5
Lesson Objective:
1.
Students will be able to build their own roller
coaster using each characteristic of the website.
2.
Students will be able to successfully build a
roller coaster that is completed from start to finish.
Instructional Techniques:
1.
Recap/Discuss what the students have learned
over the course of the last few weeks learning about motion.
2.
Demonstrate to students an example of a roller
coaster
3.
Then have students go to the computers and log
onto http://www.funderstanding.com/educators/coaster/
and experiment with the website to create a successful roller
coaster
Instructional Materials:
1.
Technology (computer for website)
2.
Handout to go along with the students building
their roller coasters
Theoretical Perspective:
When finishing this unit of science on motion, we hope
that the students will have an understanding of what goes into
making a roller coaster work and the different techniques
builders have to use to create a complete and workable track.
Procedure:
A.
Introduction:
For this assignment we as teachers will be
reviewing and wrapping up the unit of motion. As we finish this
lesson we will be taking the children to the computer lab and
have the students start getting familiar with this website.
B.
Step by step:
Once on the website the children will have the
opportunity to explore the website and start creating their own
roller coaster. After working on this assignment for a half
hour, we will ask the children their feedback and what
worked/what they struggled with.
C.
Closure:
This lesson plan is a simple, easy to follow, and
fun for the children while they are reviewing their knowledge on
motion. We created this lesson plan in hopes that the children
would gain information, and we also took into consideration
teacher’s scheduling; making this assignment quick and easy.
D.
Adaptations for different learners:
For children who may be different learners, there
isn’t much change we could make on the website to make it easier
for them. However if they are struggling with this assignment,
we as the teachers, will try our best to explain the directions
further and assist the student(s) with what they are having
trouble with.
Evaluation:
A.
We will determine that the students have met our
objectives by asking them to write down three new ideas that the
students have learned throughout the unit of science on motion.
-Objectives:
-students will
have learned three new things about motion/ building a completed
and fully workable roller coaster
B.
The only question that we have about teaching this lesson would
be how exactly would be a good way to accommodate students with
different learning needs on an interactive website? Since the
website is already made, there isn’t much as a teacher we can do
to change the website besides giving them extra time or trials.
