Theoretical
Perspective:
It is
important for our students to learn this content and be able
to classify the characteristics of different types of animals
because it will make them more aware of the environment.
It will also help them recognize the species that inhabit
the world. After completing this activity, the
students will also have a better understanding of the
different lifestyles and survival aspects.
Procedure:
1. Activator-
Having
briefly discussed different types of animal characteristics in
days prior the teacher will ask the students to take out their
notebooks and write why they believe knowing a certain animals
characteristics are important.
1. The
teacher will let the students know that these responses will
be shared and reviewed at the end of the activity.
2. The
students will be instructed to put their notebooks aside for
the meantime and will then hand out the worksheet.
3. The
teacher will place an example worksheet and model the process
the students should be following on the overhead. The teacher
will leave the example on the overhead for students to refer
back to.
4. Once
the worksheets are handed out, the teacher will explain the
directions. S/he will tell the students that on the worksheet
they will be predicting where each characteristic in the word
bank will be placed in which category. (Repeated characteristics
are there because more than one category can have the same
characteristic). The students will write the
characteristics on the lines provided below the category they
believe it exists in and cross it out in the word bank after
it has been used.
5. After
the students finish filling out their worksheets, each student
will be given a computer where the websites they will be
working with are bookmarked and the teacher will give
instructions as to how to locate the bookmarks and access the
website.
6. They
will realize that their predictions are either correct or
incorrect.
7. The
students will use their predictions from their worksheets and
mimic them on the website by dragging and dropping each
characteristic into their assumed category. If their
predication is wrong they are to put an X next to the
characteristic and if it is correct they will put a checkmark.
8. The
students will be instructed to take a look back at the
predictions they got wrong and research the specific category
they have X's next too on our second bookmarked website to
help make their second predictions.
9. Once
the students, have successfully completed filling in each
category with all of the correct characteristics the students
will hand in their worksheets to the teacher. When all of the
students have completed and handed in the assignment. The
teacher will refocus the class to begin a discussion about the
initial question the students
originally brainstormed about. The teacher will ask the
students to write 3 reasons why they now believe it is
important to know a certain animal types
characteristics.
10. After
the students have given about 2-3 minutes to write their
reasons, the teacher will ask for volunteers to share their
ideas while also asking if the other students agree or
disagree, or if they have anything to add on to their
classmate’s ideas.
Evaluation:
A.
How will you determine if you have met your objectives?
The
student will be able to successfully categorize the
different characteristics of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish
and amphibians with 100% accuracy on the worksheet.
Our
objective will be successfully completed because the students
will be handing in the documentation (their worksheet)
that will show they have corrected their wrong first
predictions and completed the activity with 100% accuracy.
B.
Concerns or Questions about teaching this lesson?
-We
are
concerned that the students may not stay focused sitting in
front of a computer and venture off to different websites
-We
are
also concerned that the students may not be truthful about
which characteristics they got wrong and not go back and
research
