Lesson Plan
Here is an example of a lesson plan we would do in one of our classrooms.

Unit Topic or Theme: Place Value/ Mathematics

Grade: Third

Lesson Topic or Theme: Subtraction/ Addition with Place Value

Lesson Objectives:

1)    Students will be able to identify their place value (ones, tenths, hundredths).

2)    Students should be able to make correct change four times out of ten.

Instructional Technique: Groups of 2 or 3

Instructional Materials:

·      Computers

·      Worksheet

·      Scrap Paper

·      Fake Money

·      Calculators

Theoretical Perspective: This information is important for students to learn because it teaches students a life skill that will help them when they enter the job world. This helps reinforce place value in a different technique than what the textbook usually offers.

Procedure:

A)   Introductory Activity (10 min)

Review place value on the board to the whole class.

Example: 5.00 – 0.08 =

                4.00 -  3.68=

Clarify any confusion the students have while doing review.

B)   Procedure (30-40 min)

·      Transition from review and put them in groups of 2 or 3. Once all the groups are settled, ask one person from the group to grab a laptop.

·      Handout the link to the whole class (printed on worksheets) along with the assessment worksheet (worksheet with money on it).

·      Have them go to link, and then check to make sure everyone is on the correct site and correct game level- Moderate.

·      Display the site to the students and show them how it works. As the teacher, answer two of the questions on the game to demonstrate with the classroom help.

·      Tell them to follow the directions of the worksheet and fill it in correctly for each problem. Make sure the students fill out each problem before they click “GO” on the website to proceed to the next problem.

·      Walk around and observe/ help where its needed while students play the game.

·      Collect the worksheet after each group plays all 10 games.

C) Closure

·      Teacher will be able to identify if the students have learned the objectives by the worksheet the teacher handed out and how many problems they have gotten correct on it.

·      After everyone is done the teacher will discuss as a class what the students liked and disliked about the website along with any troubles that they had with it.

·      Teacher should make sure he/she hears from each student giving either positive or negative feedback about the website

D)   Adaptations:

·      Provide Monopoly money for any students who would find it more helpful to visually comprehend the material and be hands on.

·      For students with severe disabilities, either the teacher or the student’s aid can work with the student one-on-one using Monopoly money, having the teacher (or aid) gives the amount paid, and student makes the change to work with before the student plays the game online.

·      Will allow a student with a disability to play the game at the Easy level instead of Moderate if they are seriously struggling.

·      Provide calculators for students with disabilities that are unable to write.

Evaluation:

A)   1. Students will be able to identify their place value.

Teacher will be able to see which specific place value (ones, tens, or hundredths) each individual student needs the most help with, or doesn’t need the most help with, after reviewing the worksheets.

2. Students should be able to make correct change 4 out of 10 times correctly.

- Teacher will look over worksheets and mark which students did not successfully get 4 out of 10 correct in the game, and will provide students with extra help in the area.
