Theoretical Perspective:

There is a push towards greener living in America currently. One of the biggest pushes is the concept of the three Rs: recycling, reducing, and reusing. This lesson is designed to focus on those concepts in context of the community that the students are living in. This will provide them with the knowledge of the concepts and examples of the concepts applied in society.

Procedure:

A.     The students will be sitting in a group together. The teacher will introduce the words recycling, reducing, and reusing. The words would be written on the board in a chart. The teacher will then go through each word, asking the students to give examples for each word. The teacher will write the student examples on the board under each word. The teacher will then provide the definition of recycling, reducing, and reusing. Next, the teacher will talk about energy sources that are considered green like solar and wind. The teacher will ask the students if they have seen solar panels or wind turbines before.

B.     The teacher will split the class into four desk groups and pass out the Recycle City handout. The students will sit at the desk groups and go to the website on the handout for the map section. The teacher will assign a group one section of the map to explore: northeast, northwest, southwest, southeast. The students will follow the handout. The teacher will move between the groups, asking the students about what they are reading and if they need clarification. After 10 minutes of group work, the teacher will redirect the students’ attention back towards the whole group. The teacher will ask the each of the groups to tell the class one way of recycling, reducing, and reusing that they learned from their section. Each member of group will share their way and then share why it fits under the concept that they chose whether it is recycling, reducing, or reusing.

C.     The teacher will pass out the Recycle City Challenge handout. The Teacher will instruct the students to work by themselves for this activity. The students will follow the handout, going through the quiz/challenge and recording their answers on the handout.

D.    The biggest adaption for the activity would be to allow the students to work in groups. The activity on the computer is very reading dependent and would be difficult for a student with a lower reading level. Placing the students together would help to balance out the reading level so that they both can get the knowledge provided to them. The groups will allow students to be able to understand the concepts and examples that are provided because they can talk with each other about how it works.

Evaluation:

A.     The first objective is “The student will be able to define the three Rs: recycling, reducing, and reusing”. This will be demonstrated in the group share out of the first activity. The introductory activity will introduce the definition of each concept to the students. Each student will share out the example that they found in the Recycle City map and explain what category it is in.  This shows that the students are able to identify how the example would be able to fit into the concept. Being able to place the example into the category shows an understanding of the concept and what makes it different from the other concepts. The second objective is “The student will be able to provide 3 real world examples for each concept: recycling, reducing, and reusing.” The successful completion of this one will be documented using the “Recycle City Challenge” handout. The handout will go through a challenge or quiz that would go through examples of recycling, reducing, and reusing in various places in a community. The quiz gives tokens for the correct answers, so the students will record the amount of tokens that they got in total and for each section. This will give a better understanding of how much the students were able to answer correct and show how much they know is the best way of recycling/reducing/reusing. The students will also record two of their answers for each of the sections. This will show what they chose as answers and see what they believe will be the best way of living a greener life.

B.     One of the big concerns would be that students when working in the group section will not be working on their sections and instead be looking around at the other sections such as the game sections. My other concern is that the students will not provide the answers that they chose for the challenge and put the answer that they think is the best.
