Sample Lesson Plan

Unit topic: Mathematics

Grade: 3rd

Lesson Topic: Multiplication of single digit numbers

Lesson Objectives:

The students will be able to participate and practice multiplication in a whole group setting through the projected website, and individually through an interactive website. The students must also work on a worksheet in order to make and demonstrate progress towards mastering multiplication.

Instructional Techniques:

Large group (whole class) work/ demonstration and Individual work

Instructional Materials:

For this lesson the materials are the website on multiplication for the whole class portion, a projector that projects what is on the teacher’s computer, the website for individual work, a computer for each student, the worksheet done individually, work paper, and a writing utensil.

Theoretical Perspective:

This information is important for students to learn because they must establish a solid foundation in single digit multiplication if they want to be able to succeed in double and triple digit multiplication and so on. Also, multiplication is essential to all aspects of math that the students will eventually learn all the way through high school. Multiplication is additionally an important life skill to have outside of math class. It is used in activities like managing money, cooking, grocery shopping, and understanding sports.

Lesson Plan:

  1. The teacher will call the students’ attention to the front projection board and project practice problems from the website listed below.

  1. The students will first choose the correct option and then individually solve the problems on paper in front of them.

  2. The teacher will call on students to share answers, making sure they are not abruptly shouting out. The teacher will make sure to provide all students enough time to figure out the answer because they must keep in mind that some students will solve it faster than others. The teacher will also make sure to vary the students that they call on to say the answer.

  3. The teacher will then move to the next activity by asking students to get a laptop and sit down with it at their desk until everyone has a laptop.

  4. The teacher will ask the students to open their laptop and follow what the teacher does on the projector.

  5. The teacher will write the URL on the board as well as say it out loud as they type it in.

  6. The teacher will then go around and make sure all students are on the right website and ask if they have questions.

  7. The teacher will also give a brief demonstration to the students through the projected website to show them how to play the game.

9.        The students will do the activity on the laptop for 15 minutes while the teacher walks around to keep them on task and answer any questions that may arise. Then after the allotted time the students will put the laptops away one by one making sure to plug them in.

10.    The students will receive a worksheet of multiplication problems that they will have five minutes to complete. The students will not know that the certain amount of time they are given. This is just for the teacher to see how many each student can complete correctly within the same amount of time. After the five minutes are up the students will hand in their papers so the teacher can assess how well the students are doing with single digit multiplication. (See copy of worksheet at the end)

Closure:

Today the students have practiced multiplication. This gives the teacher a sense of who is understanding and who still needs some work and extra help.

Adaptations:

The teacher will know ahead of time the students that may need extra help. During the online activity those kids will go to the back table to work with the teacher and write out each problem that pops up on the computer and figure it out with the teacher. They will do the worksheet on their own as it is not a test but rather just the teacher checking in on how the students are doing.

Homework:

No homework is given but they may keep playing the Frogtastic Multiplication for extra practice if they would like to.

Evaluation:

The teacher will know they have met their objectives when all students have actively participated in the group discussion, played the multiplication game on the computer, as well as worked on the multiplication worksheet to see if the game has helped them improve their multiplication skills. The teacher will not know who is doing well with multiplication until they have walked around the room and observed as the students are on their computers or if they notice a few students during the whole group setting. The teacher will have more of a clear view on how much more time needs to be spent on multiplication after reviewing the worksheets the students worked on.
