Unit Topic: The 13 Colonies

Grade: 3rd

Lesson Topic: Massachusetts

Lesson Objectives:

• Students will be able to identify the state on any given map of the United State or 13 Colonies by the end of the lesson.

• Students will be able to identify the importance of Massachusetts in the Revolutionary War.

Instructional Materials:

• https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/states/massachusetts/

• Computers 

• Guideline hand out with the website link and the worksheet with the map of the United States, the Colonies and questions on Massachusetts history.

• Pencils

Procedure:

• The teacher and students will work on computers to learn about Massachusetts the 6th state to join the colonies.

Introductory Activity

• The teacher will start by asking the students to name the colonies that they have learned up until that point. 

• The teacher will then introduce the students to the lesson for the day.

Step-by-Step 

• The teacher will hand out the guideline worksheet and students will go to the computers.

• Once students are at the computers, they will log in and follow the guideline portion of the worksheet to the website.

• Once students have reached the website they will begin to answer the questions on the worksheet using the website as instructed. 

• Students will complete the worksheet individually and pass in the worksheet to the teacher. 

Closure 

• Once all students have passed in the worksheet they will gather with the teacher at the front of the room to do a review. 

• The teacher will hand out at random the worksheet back to the class ensuring that the worksheets go to a different student than the student who filled out the worksheet. 

• The teacher will then ask the students to answer the questions with what they have on the pager they were given and write the correct answer if it is wrong on the worksheet and then hand the marked-up worksheet to the teacher. 

Evaluation

• Students will be able to identify the state on any given map of the United State or 13 Colonies by the end of the lesson.

• Students will have a map of the United States and the 13 Colonies on their worksheet and label the state.

• Students will be able to identify the importance of Massachusetts in the Revolutionary War.

• Students will have answered questions based on the information on the website about the importance of Massachusetts in the Revolutionary War.
