Unit Topic or Theme: Math - Shot clock

Grade: 3rd

Lesson Topic or theme: The lesson is going over the different equations and making sure that the students are aware of the different signs and meaning ( +,-, x, /).

Lesson Objectives:

  • The students will be able to understand the symbols.

  • The students will be able to see what they got wrong and has another chance to fix it.

Instructional Materials:

  • Shot Clock Activity handout

  • Laptop provided at each station

Procedure:

  • As a teacher I would first go over a brief introduction of what they will be doing and choose one equation to go over as a class. The students would be helping me answer these questions in the review.

  • Students then would get separated into 6 groups and work on the different operations for 7 minutes then switch groups.

  • During these groups the students will be working individually with this activity.

A. Introductory activity  :

  • The topic being introduced would be understanding math equations and answering them correctly, so we will go over practice math problems on the white board to get them ready for the activity.

B. Step-by- Step :

  • The teacher will upload the website for the activity on the computers for the students

  • The teacher will put the students into 6 groups.

  • At each station, there is a specific operation that the group will choose on the website.

  • The students will stay at each station for 7 minutes and then switch station until every group has done each station.

  • The students will record their wrong answers and the total score they got at the end of the game on the handout for each station.

C. Closure :

  • The teacher will discuss/go over any operations that the students had the most difficulty with.

  • The teacher would then hand out a table with all of the equations on it. This will give the teacher an idea of where her students are at and which students she needs to work with more.

Evaluation:

  • At the end of the lesson, the teacher will go over the handouts the students handed in to see if the students were successful with this lesson or if they need more practice doing a specific operation.

  • The students will be able to understand the symbols.
