Lesson Plan |
Geography Third Grade Identifying oceans and continents The student will be able to identify five oceans and/or continents in a row without making an incorrect guess. At the end of the lesson, they will be able to recall four oceans or continents. Instructions:
Procedure: The first part of the class will be an introductory lesson on every continent and ocean across the globe. Afterwards, the students will spend the remainder of the class on IXL.com reviewing the location of each continent and ocean. As the students are doing this activity they will be filling out the handout given to them. This handout will allow the students to keep track of which answers they get correct and incorrect. The students will turn this handout in after class is over, their name does not have to be on it because it will simply help the teacher see which oceans and continents need to be taught again with greater emphasis. Introductory Activity: At the start of the class, students will pick up a worksheet of a blank map. The class will go over where certain oceans and continents are and color code them for visual aid. This can help them during the next activity. Step-by-step: The teacher will pass out the blank world map sheet to each student. On the board, a list of all of the oceans and continents should be listed with a specific color assigned to each. The class will go over the correct places of each ocean and continent. A projector can be used to help students point out to the class where certain places are and the teacher can be following along and pointing to specific areas that need to be colored. Once every student's map is fully colored in, the second worksheet will be passed out to each student that has instructions on how to do the next activity on the computer. Students will go to IXL.com, scroll down to third grade and press the Social Studies Skills, then, they will go to A.4. Identify Oceans and Continents and press start. As the students continue to locate oceans and continents, they will mark down on the sheet of paper that has been passed out which oceans and continents that they get right and which ones they get wrong. Even if a continent or ocean is repeated in their online lesson, they should be encouraged to write it down again if they get it right or wrong. The students will continue to do this until there is 10 minutes left in the class period. Once that time is there, the teacher will then collect the papers and hand out the closing activity sheet. The students, when they are done, will put the closing sheet in the “to-go” basket and that will be the end of the lesson. Evaluation: The objectives for this specific lesson was that the students will be able to get five correct in a row on the online activity and at the end of the class period, be able to recall four oceans or continents. I have collected the sheets that they used to mark what they got right and wrong and I can assess by how many the students were getting wrong and how often. This can help me determine which students are struggling and which students are grasping the concept more easily. The closing activity will help me see if they remembered the names of the ocean/continents and not so much where they are located since that was achieved in the previous activity. This is not a graded activity as it is simply an introduction to the subject and allows students to get comfortable and familiar with the material. |
