  • Lesson Topic or Theme: The 50 States

  • Lesson Objectives:

    • The students will be able to list the 50 states in the United States. 

    • The students will be able to fill in a map with the 50 states.

  • Instructional Materials: map of the United States, pencils, The 50 States Assignment worksheet, worksheet #1, worksheet #2, 50 small pieces of paper with #’s 1-50 on them, basket.

  • Procedure:

    • A. Introductory Activity

      • The teacher will hang up a U.S. map on the board in front of the class. Then the teacher will ask the class if anyone can raise their hand and tell them what that is a map of. Then the teacher will proceed to ask if anyone could come up to the front of the class and point out the state that they are currently in. After the teacher has had the class answer those questions, they will begin their activity.

    • B. Step-by-step (descriptive outline)

      • 1. The teacher will have the class clear off their desks of everything except a pencil, if someone needs a pencil the teacher will pass one out. 

      • 2. The teacher will then hand out The 50 States Assignment worksheet and worksheet #1 and let the students know they may begin working.

      • 3. Using the directions on The 50 States Assignment worksheet, the students will begin working on worksheet #1.

      • 4. Once the students have completed steps 1 & 2, they should raise their hand. The teacher will go to the students and make sure all of their states are filled in. Then the teacher will give each student a laptop.

      • 5. Once the students receive their laptop, they should log in, go onto google, and type https://www.coolmathgames.com/0-guess-countries-us-states into the search bar. 

      • 6. Using worksheet #1 the students will type in all of the states into the game until the entire map on the website is filled. 

      • 7. Once the map is filled, the students will raise their hand and the teacher will go over to them and give them worksheet #2. 

      • 8. On worksheet #2 the students will fill in the number corresponding with the state on worksheet #1 into the correct state on the map. 

      • 9. Once the students have finished they should raise their hand. 

      • 10. The teacher will go over to the student with their hand raised and make sure worksheet #2 is completed. If it is, the teacher can give permission to the student to play other games on coolmath.com. 

      • 11. Once all of the students have finished worksheet #2, the teacher will pick two students at a time to return their laptops to the laptop cart. 

    • C. Closure

      • The teacher will put the 50 pieces of paper with #’s 1-50 on them, into the basket. Then the teacher will go around the room and have each student pull a piece of paper from the basket. Whichever number a student gets, is the number of the state, from worksheet #1, that they will have to go up to the map on the board and point out for the class. The students may use their worksheets to help them identify where the state is on the map. The teacher will pick who goes for each time. When the student is picked they will have to go up to the map and say which state they got and point to where it is on the map. After each student has gone, the teacher will remind the class to make sure their names are on worksheets #1 and #2 and then the teacher will collect them. 

  • Evaluation:

    • The students will be able to list the 50 states in the United States. The students will be able to show they can do this by filling in the worksheet that asks the students to list the 50 states. 

    • The students will be able to fill in a map with the 50 states. The students will be able to show they can do this by filling in the map on the worksheet that asks the students to put the name of the state on the map. 


The 50 States Assignment 

Previously we have worked on learning the names of the 50 states in the United States of America. Now it is time to test our knowledge of the states and begin to learn the locations of the 50 states. Please follow the steps below.

1. Using worksheet #1, fill in the blanks of all 50 states. If you get stuck, raise your hand and ask for help from the teacher.

2. Once you have filled in all of the states, raise your hand and wait for the teacher to come over.

3. Once you have received your laptop, log in and go onto google. 

4. In the search bar, type in this website:

https://www.coolmathgames.com/0-guess-countries-us-states

5. Once the game loads, press on the button that says “GO!”

6. Type into the white rectangle a state you have listed worksheet #1. If the name of the state does not move to its state’s location, it is not correctly spelt.

7. Continue typing in all of the states you have listed on worksheet #1.

8. Once you have typed in all of them, raise your hand.

9. Using your map online and worksheet #1, fill in your map on worksheet #2 with the number that corresponds with the state on worksheet #1. Do not try to write out the states on the map, there is not enough room!

10. After you have finished, raise your hand and wait for further instructions from the teacher.
