Gladiators are armed combatants that entertained the Roman citizens and high society of the Roman Republic and Empire. Gladiators most of the times were slaves, ex-soldiers and volunteers. In the case of the volunteers they gave up their social position to be able to fight in the arena. During the golden age of Gladiators they were considered to be heroes and were idolized by many to be men of valor and honor. In comparison with today they would be professional sport icons.
