Unit Topic or Theme: Science

Grade: 3rd grade

Lesson Topic or Theme: Solar System

Lesson Objectives:

1. Make students comfortable with their knowledge about the Solar System.

2. Prepare students for upcoming test.

3. Students can further explore and find information about the Solar System.

Instructional Technique: Using the interactive website we’ve created, class discussion before completing the online activity

Instructional Materials: Computer, website we created, piece of paper for the students to write their five facts

Theoretical Perspective: Students need to be informed not only about the planet we live on, but all of them.  It is a foundation of science that can be further developed later on in Astronomy classes.

Procedure:

A. Introductory Activity: The teacher will discuss with the class that the purpose of this lesson is to review what they have learned about the solar system.  The teacher will remind students what good web behavior is and how to log onto the website and use it correctly.

B. Step-by-step:

1. Students will log on to the computer and go to the interactive website.

2. The students will work their way to the end of the game by answering the questions accurately.  Under each question will be at least one outside source that can help the students answer the questions if they are unsure, or to learn more about what the question is asking.  These websites don’t need to be used if the student already knows the answer.

3. While completing the game, students need to write a total of five facts they found from the outside sources that they did not know before completing the game.

4. At the end of the game, students will need to click the link that says “Print Score” and hand in to the teacher.  This and the five facts will be handed in after completing the game.

C. Closure: Ask students if the website was helpful for review.  Remind them that they can access the website at home and suggest they study more and review the websites for the upcoming test.

D. Adaptations for different learners: Teacher is available during class time to help any struggling readers and students with poor study skills are advised to write down notes while completing the activity that could help them study.  They can have parents at home or friends after class quiz them on the content of the website.  The website is accessible at home for further studying.

E. Homework: Study for test on the Solar System.

Evaluation:

A. How/ when will you determine if you have met your objectives?

Make students comfortable with their knowledge about the Solar System.  We will know if this objective was met by getting extra practice with the website and well-rounded learning because of the outside sources that can be used from our website.

Prepare students for upcoming test. We will be able to determine if the students were prepared for the test by their scores on the game from the website and on the test.

Students can further explore and find information about the Solar System. By having students write facts from outside sources (found on our website), we will see that they have found more information than was given in our textbook.

B. Concerns or questions you have about teaching this lesson?: If the internet were to not work properly would be a concern.  Students not taking the review seriously is a concern because it is a simple task to complete.  It could be easy for the students to become distracted or get off task.
