Math
Grade 4
Word Problems
Instructional Technique:
There will be group work in this lesson because it is the first day of new material.  Letting the students work with a partner will allow them to bounce ideas off each other.
Instructional Materials:
Paper, Pencils, worksheet, computer, whiteboard, markers
Objectives:
Students will know how to solve word problems
Theoretical Perspective:
Word problems in math are something that will be very beneficial for the students to learn because throughout their life they will be using word problems.  It will help the student to figure important information out when there isn’t a formula or equation present.

Procedure:

    Introduction:
The teacher will begin the lesson by introducing word problems and asking if there is anyone in the class that knows about word problems.  After a few minutes of discussion, the teacher will begin to explain how to do word problems.  After the explanation the teacher will go over a few practice problems with the entire class.
    Step-By-Step:
After the introduction and a few practice problems, the teacher will pass out a worksheet.  The worksheet can be done with a partner and if there are an uneven number of students there may be a group of three.  The students will have 5 problems to do with a partner.  After the problems on the worksheet are done, the students may use the computers in the back of the room to take the work problem quiz of the website.
    Closure:
When the students are finished, they will return to their own seats.  If they are done before other students they can take out a book to read silently until the rest of the class is done, or they can work on more work problems from the worksheet that was given out.   Once everyone is done, the students will clean up if need be and then return to their own seats.  The teacher will then ask if there are any more questions.
    Adaptations:
The lesson will incorporate group work where each student has a partner to work with.  This allows for students who may struggle with math to be partnered up another student so that they can work together.  There are many different ways the material is being presented; lecture form, worksheet with a partner, and the computer and Internet is incorporated into the lesson to give different learners a way to view the material.

Evaluation:
    A.
Students will know how to solve word problems
The completion of the worksheet handed out will give the teacher an assessment of the student’s ability to solve word problems.

    B.   Questions and Concerns
If the students are struggling with the material what is a way to help them out?
By letting the students work together on the worksheet will it fully let the teacher assess who is struggling and who is understanding the material?
