Unit Topic: Anatomy
Grade: 3
Lesson Plan Topic: Bones in the body
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to name certain bones in the body and match them to where they are in the body.
Instructional Technique: class discussion and online quiz.
Instructional Materials: “Bones Quiz” Handout, computers, and interactive online quiz.
Theoretical Perspective: This lesson is important for students to know because students should have the basic knowledge of what the different names in their body.
Procedure
Introductory
Teacher will call students to circle at the front of the room
Teacher will ask multiple questions about what they might think the name of the bone is by pointing different parts of the body.
What is the name of the bone also known as your kneecap?
What is the name of one the bones in your leg?
What is the name of the bone that makes up you head?
What is the name of one of the bones in your arm?
B. Main Lesson
Teacher will instruct students to either work individually or in small groups of two or three then to grab a computer. Then the teacher will handout the “Bones Quiz” handout. On the handout will be the link to the website and instructions of what to do after they have completed the online quiz. The students will answer different matching questions to learn what the name of each bone is. On the handout they will have to label a skeleton of the name of the bones they learned about throughout the quiz. They will also have to write down a couple new facts about the bones.
C. Closure
At the end of the lesson, the class will come together to discuss what they had learned about the bones of the body and to show where they had labeled the skeleton. The teacher then will go over any bones that they might’ve had a hard time with. Then the teacher will have the students stand up to play a game of Simon Says (bones version). During this game the “Simon” will ask everyone to point to a bone they learned about from the quiz. At the end of the week the teacher will reward the students by showing a Magic School Bus episode about the body.
D. Adaptations
For students who work quickly and want to be further challenged, there is an extra credit option for them at the end of the worksheet to continue learning about the body. They are given the choice to choose the next topic about the human body.
ELL students can be grouped with the teacher or paired with a strong reader who can read the information on the website out loud.
E. No homework will be given
Evaluation
Our objective was: Students will be able to name certain bones in the body and match them to where they are in the body.
Students are asked to fill out a blank skeleton by labeling the bones they had learned about from the online quiz. The teacher will look to make sure they matched the bones to right body part. On the worksheet the students are asked to go to an outside source in order to learn more about the bone. They are asked to write down two or three facts they found interesting. This gives a better understanding to what some of the functions of the bone is and to see the smaller bones that make it up.
B. Concerns
A concern that a teacher might have is some of the student’s might not fully understand where the bone might be on the body or might’ve not gotten a good score on the quiz by the end of the activity and will still have questions.
