Salary Negotiation
How to Negotiate:

Although salary negotiation may seem like an option reserved for skilled business people, if you do your research and prepare, anyone can effectively negotiate an offer.

  • Give evidence: In order to ask for more money, you have to be able to prove that you are worth the higher pay that you are negotiating. In order to do this it is important to highlight your relevant experiences, certifications, education, etc.
  • Know what the proper negotiation should be: It is important to be educated and prepared with realistic expectations of what you can and should be asking for.
  • Be respectful: The biggest point to remember when negotiating is to be respectful. Being aggressive or rude with your negotiations can be a quick way to turn off the employer.
What to Negotiate:

When most think of salary negotiating they automatically think of just pay, but there is another factor to consider: benefits. Benefits is a wide-ranging category that can include many of the following:

  • Time off, number of sick days, vacations, etc.
  •  401K, sign-on bonus and stocks
  • Your start date
  • Relocation or travel expenses
When to Negotiate:

Negotiating salary and benefits should only be done after a job offer is made, doing so in an interview can limit your chances for getting a job offer.
