Champions Orientation: Academic Success Session Notes

General Reminders!

All incoming new students need to submit their ID pictures by  August 17th

Student COVID-19 and all other Health Forms are due by August 5th 

Students can now register for our Orientation program happening September 2nd-5th, please remind them to register!

Both the Sexual Assualt and Alcohol Awareness prevention modules are due by October 31st, if students do not complete these mandatory courses by this due date, they will be charged a $100 fee

  • As faculty, we want to create a partnership between us on campus, and you Champions at home in order to help your student in the best ways we can
  • By federal law, Professors can not share a students grades, and other information with anyone other then that student 
  • FERPA Waiver gives Champions/parents access to student information
  • Here is the link for the waiver: https://www.westfield.ma.edu/documents/parent-ferpawaiver 
  • Students on this form can choose what information they want Champions to receive
  • Any completed FERPA waivers need to be turned into the Registrar’s office either by mailing the physical copy in or turning in a physical copy to the office. The form can not be submitted by email
  • Students grades will be posted in students myWestfield accounts at the end of each semester 
  • Students are able to withdraw FERPA waivers at any time, and the Champions will not be notified if they do
  • Champions should encourage their students to be independent
  • Academic Advisors do many things for students, including help build their schedules
  • Students having relationships with their advisors benefit students 
  • Students in the Banacos Center do have an advisor through that program, but they also do have an advisor in their field of study
  • Computers are essential for all college students
  • Unless the students major specifically says that they need a certain type of computer, students only criteria for a computer is that it works
  • There are computer labs on campus for students to use 
  • Students can contact the Banacos Center at any time about signing up or getting accommodations 
  • Attendance policies are big! Make sure your students pay attention to how many absences they are allowed
  • Students are encouraged to reach out to professors beforehand if they know they will be missing class
  • Students do have flexibility to change their majors 
  • PLATO is what faculty use in order to manage their class. A lot of professors utilize this site to post assignments, post tests, and even have students turn in assignments and papers
  • Classes do not show up on PLATO until the first day of classes
  • PLATO will not allow students to log in until September 
  • The log in information will be the students university email and their password
  • Textbooks- the best time to get textbooks is during the first week of classes. We recommend that students do not buy textbooks before classes start
  • The add/drop period ends September 12th 
  • Students can adjust their schedules during the add/drop period 
  • 12 credits is the minimum amount of credits to be considered a “full time” student
  • Over 18 credits in a semester requires permission 
  • Orientation leaders will bring students on tours to find their classes during Orientation Weekend
