500 Word Creative Response (10% course grade)

The 500-word creative response asks that you enter the theory and fiction we are reading as a writer, poet, performer, or visual artist. The 500-word requirement is indeed flexible. As we continue our study of postmodernism, you will find that it has various aspects, elements, and dimension that you cannot possibly master, understand, or address all at one time, regardless of the approach taken (for example the ones we’ve already begun: critical analysis and applied theory). Here, I am looking for you to select an attribute of postmodernism that you feel inspired to pursue a bit further. You may choose to create a forgery of the style or approach of one of the writers we have read. You may choose to create a piece of visual art that reflects postmodern aesthetics, or plays on work of a postmodern artist you’ve encountered this term. You may choose to write a first person performance narrative that explores the dimensions of your own postmodern identity crisis, or lack thereof. This assignment is vastly open and free—so much so that I expect it will give some of you heartache. However, as with all the assignments this term, I will measure success based on how passionately and aggressively you have engaged with the process of creating a personalized text that explores postmodernism in some original and personal way.

There will be a due date for a proposal, and a second date for the completed creative response.

Collaborations are allowed.

You will be expected to give a brief presentation of your creative response to the class.
