The preliminary spelling bee included participation from more than 500 students in the city’s elementary school system. The elementary schools represented are: Abner Gibbs, Franklin Avenue, Highland Avenue, Munger Hill, Paper Mill, Southampton Road, and Russell School.

The finalists for the 2019 competition are Lanah Woody and Mohammad Khanan from Abner Gibbs, Jordan Bell and Maxim Gravrilov from Franklin Avenue, Boris Borisov and Katherine Gutsul from Highland Avenue, Jonas Miller and Grace Connors from Munger Hill, Evan Paradis and Daniel Romanelli from Paper Mill, and Giovanni Santaniello and Bridget LaFew from Southampton Road.

Each elementary school sends its top two students to the finals at Westfield State. The final 14 students face off at the event, where they will each receive a finalist medal. Additional prizes are also awarded to the top three spellers. A plaque with the names of the winners, along with their school, is awarded to the top student’s school annually.
