New Employee Orientation

This section contains all new benefited employee documentation for employment and benefits.

If you are a new hire for a benefited position, you will complete your new hire documentation via our online onboarding program, Interview Exchange, the same account used to apply for benefited positions.

If you are a contracted employee, your hiring department will provide you with your employment package. This page does not apply to you.

Refer to our Benefits and Wellness page for more detailed information related to available benefits.

Guides and Program Flyers
Policy

The following four policies are provided to all new employees as part of the new employee orientation process.

Summary of the Conflict of Interest Law for State Employees
Drug Free Workplace Act Informational Pamphlet
Employees Rights and Responsibilities Under FMLA
Mass. State College EEO/Diversity/AA Plan and Title IX Policy

The receipt of the above listed policies must be acknowledged by new employees by completing the University Policy Acknowledgement and Understanding Notice.

Union and Non-Unit Information

Most benefited employees are employed in positions that are governed by a union and a collective bargaining agreement (CBA). These positions are referred to "unit" positions. Positions not governed by a union are "non-unit" positions. For specific union and non-unit information, refer to the Union Information page.

Refer to your appointment letter or the job posting to know what union and/or category your position falls under. Some benefits are exclusive to specific groups of employees based on union or position type. Contracted positions are temporary and non-benefited and do not apply here.

AFSCME: American Federation of State and County and Municipal Employees is the union whose members are hourly employees. Also referred to classified employees. Within the AFSCME union, there are two units. Unit 1 is administrative and clerical employees scheduled to work 37.5 hours per week for full time positions. Unit 2 is technical, security, and trade employees scheduled to work 40 hours per week for full time positions.

NUC: Non-Unit Classified positions include non-unit hourly employees. These positions are similar to Unit 1 AFSCME positions and receive the same pay based on the AFSCME grade and step tables, but are not represented by the AFSCME union.

APA:  Association of Professional Administrators is the union whose members are salaried staff scheduled to work 37.50 hours per week for full time positions.  Within the APA union, there are two types of APA positions, exempt and non-exempt. Exempt positions are not eligible for overtime. Non-exempt positions are eligible for overtime and track their time worked like hourly employees.

NUP: Non-Unit Professional positions include non-unit salaried employees. These positions are similar to APA exempt positions, but are not represented by the APA union.

MSCA: Massachusetts State College Association is the union whose members are salaried faculty scheduled to work 37.50 hours per week for full time positions.
