Off Campus Laptop / Software Setup

Here you will find simple instructions for setting up a University Laptop that you have picked up from the Library and installing software needed for your classes. These devices are still in the box and have not been touched by the University yet, so the setup process is similar to if you purchased the device yourself. It does seem like there are a lot of steps, but the process should not take more than a few minutes. I wanted to try and put every step that you may encounter during the process. If at any time these instructions do not make sense or are different from what you are seeing, please do not hesitate to contact the Support Desk (supportdesk@westfield.ma.edu).

Lenovo Laptop

  • The device may have a removable battery in the box. If it does, please click the battery into place.
  • Plug the device into power and press the power button.
  • Select 'English' and click YES.
  • Cortona will start to speak to you and you can follow her promtps if you wish, but I prefer to turn the volume down. You can do so by clicking the volume icon in the lower right corner.

  • Select 'US' for your keyboard layout and click YES.
  • It will ask if you want to add another keyboard layout, click SKIP.

  • This next step can take a few minutes. The device is configuring things in the background, so be patient.
  • The next screen to pop up will be a license screen. Click ACCEPT.
  • On the next screen is where we will setup your user account. Select 'Setup for an organization' and click NEXT. Then in the lower left corner, select 'Domain Join Instead' and click NEXT. Enter a username, anything is fine and click NEXT. You can choose to enter a password or leave it blank and click NEXT. Please note, if you choose to create a password for this device it will ask you to create security questions as well.
  • The next screen asks if you would like to use Cortana as your assistant; ACCEPT or DECLINE.
  • On the next screen click NO.
  • Then ACCEPT.
  • Then SKIP.
  • And again, be patient. The device will need to perform some more tasks in the background. Once these have completed, you will be on your desktop.
  • Once on the desktop, please install an anti-virus solution to further protect your online experience. While Windows 10 does have built in protection, Westfield State recommends that you install a dedicated virus protection package.
