Outline of
Lesson Plan
Theme: Plants
Grade: 2nd
Lesson
Theme: Vocabulary, writing, math (mean mode, median)
Objectives:
· The student
will be able to use new vocabulary terms related to the theme
of the lesson
· The student
will be able to identify the parts of a plant and write a
small paragraph about it.
· The students
will take the plant quiz. The scores will be recorded and we
use the scores to identify the mean median and mode.
Instructional
technique:
· Handouts on
vocabulary with matching
· Demonstration
with a real flower
· Journal entry
on practicing paragraphs about plants
Instructional
materials:
· Website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/5_6/growing_plants_fs.shtml
· Plant
worksheet
· Math Worksheet
· Live plant
· Journals
Theoretical
Perspective:
This
information is important to learn because students will be
able to form a small paragraph off of the information on the
plant using vocabulary. Vocabulary will help the students be
familiar with material in the future so they can use previous
knowledge to learn new information.
It is crucial that
kids learn at a young age how to write to help them in the
long run with essays that have multiple paragraphs. They will
be able to find simple math terms like mean mode and median
with the scores that they tally up in the class. This
information will introduce the basics of math and finding
answers with many numbers. The students will be able to
identify vocabulary words and match where they are on a
diagram of a plant.
Procedure:
A. Introductory
Activity: Live plant demonstration
B. Step by Step:
· First the
students will observe a live plant and guess what the parts of
the plant are on the website activity using a worksheet along
with it.
· Then we will
reveal what the parts are together with definitions after the
students play with the activity online on how to grow a plant.
· After, the
students will write a short paragraph about a plant using the
terms learned on the second worksheet.
· Next, the
students will take the quiz on the online module and record
all of our scores.
· Using all the
individual scores from the class we will learn simple math
averages
· The math
worksheet includes how to identify mode, mean, & median
C. Concluding
activity: Writing a journal entry on everything we learned.
D. Adaptations:
Struggling students will:
· Have a
modification in writing only a few sentences rather than a
paragraph
· Have more
simple numbers or less numbers to figure out mode mean etc.
· Providing a
reader
E. Homework:
Provide examples of what the math terms learned today mean in
one small paragraph
F. Evaluation:
· The paragraph
in journal/worksheet will have proper grammar and punctuation.
It will be seven sentences long.
· The plant
worksheet will have proper definitions on the parts
· The proper
numbers will be listed next to the math terms.
