A Recent Lesson

We in room 205 wanted to share a recent lesson that we did on shapes. Below you can see the objectives of our lesson, the website that we used and an accompanying worksheet that the students used.
If you have any questions about the lesson or future lessons, please either email me (my email can be found on the Meet The Teacher page) or when you next see us in class

Unit Topic or Theme:                      Math

Grade: Second grade

Lesson Topic or Theme: 2D Shape Identification

Lesson Objectives: (The student will be able to ....)

By the end of the lesson the student will be able to:

Identify key shapes and their properties,

Square, triangle, circle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon and oval

Draw the key shapes

Make connections and identify shapes in student’s everyday lives.

Instructional Technique: (group work, debate, discussion, lecture, experiment, demonstration, etc.)

Watch an informative video on the projector

Individual work on computer with a worksheet in front of them to keep them on task

Groups of 3 or 4 students to make shapes with rulers.

Instructional Materials: (provide specific bibliographic information and/or copies of handouts, instructional sheets etc.)

Materials needed to lead this class are:

Overhead projector to show video to whole class,

Worksheet to guide students to the shape website and for to write the names of shapes

Use rulers for closing activity

Youtube Video

Shape Game

Worksheet included

Theoretical Perspective: Academic rationalism. Why is this information important for your students to learn. (content focus of the lesson)

It is important for students to be able to identify shapes because they are the fundamentals of mathematics and an important part of cognitive learning.

Students recognize shapes in their everyday environment, and even identify them before letters and numbers. They also help with recognition of everyday objects as a collection shapes. Example: an 8 can be identified as two circles on top of each other.

Shapes are symbols and once learned, can help students learn other symbols such as letters.

Sorting, classifying and organization skills

Prepares students for more complicated subjects such as higher level geometry

Procedure: (As a teacher, what will you and the students do.)

A. Introductory Activity (if applicable)

The introduction activity for this lesson is using

Youtube Video

Play video

B. Step-by-step (descriptive outline)

The core of this lesson is using Shape Game combined with a guiding worksheet

Distribute the worksheet to each student

The worksheet has a step by step guide to help students find the website

The website should be already bookmarked on the student’s computers to aid this process

Have students identify the shapes/objects that are included in the game on their worksheet

Have students identify each object as they are progressing through the game

C. Closure

The closure of this lesson is:

Put students into small groups of three or four and pass out rulers. Make sure that each group has enough rulers to make each shape.

Using the rulers, have the students physically make the shapes, as the teacher calls them out

Once the groups have made four shapes, have them join with another group and make the shapes again but larger

Continue making the shapes and combining groups until the whole class is working together to make each shape

As a final discussion, the teacher should ask students for feedback about the activity, what they understood the most, and which shapes they found difficult to make and which they found easy.

D. Adaptations for different learners (i.e. non-native speakers, struggling readers or math phobic learners, students with poor study skills)

Our lesson doesn’t need many adaptations because students will be interested and interactive in this lesson. They use the computers to play a game and also it is a hands on lesson with the rulers. The homework is like a scavenger hunt to find the shapes so they will be excited to complete it. We made sure the lesson was simple and inclusive for everyone in the classroom. However some adaptations could be:

The teacher can go around and help anyone who needs it

If students have a hard time with physical activity, they could give direction to a partner

If students have a learning disability they could be put in a group of students who have a good understanding of this lesson

E. Homework

The homework that will accompany this lesson is:

Look around the student’s home and find three objects

Draw the three objects on a plain piece of paper

Identify the shapes within each object and color in the shapes

The student should also bring their pictures into class and be able to identify the shapes within each object, what the shapes are called, as well as properties of the shapes

Evaluation:

How/ when will you determine if you have met your objectives?

Please list each of your stated objectives for the lesson. Then demonstrate how you will document successful completion for each.

B. Concerns or questions you have about teaching this lesson?

We will determine that the students have met our objectives with the closing activity, by allowing them to physically make the shapes, we are able to see that the students understand how they are composed.

The only concern about teaching this lesson is that some students may find it too easy.  This can be addressed by adding more complex shapes.
