Lesson For Tomorrow...

Unit Topic or Theme: Skeletal System

Lesson Topic or Theme: Naming the different types of bones in the skeletal system.

Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to locate and identify all of the 20 bones in the skeletal system.

Instructional Technique: Group work, handouts, discussion, and simulation

Instructional Materials: Handout of bone definitions, as well as skeleton handout.

Theoretical Perspective: The information given to the students is important to learn because it gives students knowledge about the different functions each bone to help function the human body.

 Procedure:

    A. Introductory Activity KWL discussion Chart, which tracks what a student knows (K), wants to know (W), and has learned (L).

    1.                  Hand out a plain white paper to students for KWL chart

    2.                  Explain to students how to do (KWL chart). Then have a discussion on their charts.

    3.                  Students will keep their charts so they can fill in the (L) column at the end of class.

    4.                  The teacher will then pass out handout #1 (key points/definitions)

    5.                  Teacher will go over the key points will the class and then give them their assignment.

    6.                  Their assignment consists of combining their notes with an online game to help them locate/identify the 20 bones in the human skeleton.

    7.                  Next students get a laptop or computer and go on the website www.abcya.com/skeletal_system.htm

    8.                  Once everyone has completed their online assignment, the laptops will be put away and the class will come together and discuss the issues they had while completing the assignment.

    9.                  After the discussion, the teacher will pass out handout #2, a diagram of a human skeleton and the supplies needed (marshmallows and toothpicks).

    10.               The teacher will explain the activity where the students must simulate a human skeleton using only their materials and diagram.

    11.               Once this activity is completed the teacher will give the students 1015 minutes to fill in their (L) column on their KWL Chart.

    12.               When the students have finished the teacher will collect all the completed assignments and end the class with a short video on the skeletal system. Teacher will then assign the online homework/ homework worksheet for those who may not have access to a computer. Online Homework: http://www.myschoolhouse.com/courses/O/1/82.asp

C. Closure: Play video on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzUNWeIJerg

D.   Adaptations for different learners: For KWL Chart if there are students who have trouble writing then we would have a discussion after everyone finishes their charts and give the students who did not write a chance to say what they know and want to know.
