Lesson Plan Sample!!

Unit Topic or Theme: Patterns

Grade: Preschool

Lesson Plan Topic/Theme: Patterns in Nature

Lesson Plan Objective: Students will be able to follow simple AaBbAaBb as well as AbBaAbBa patterns on handout creating by the teacher

Students will be able to create their own pattern being either AaBbAaBb or AbBaAbBa.

Instructional Techniques: discussion, work done individually, brought together with whole group circle time share.

Instructional Materials: projector, tablets, markers, whiteboard

Theoretical Perspective: Patterns are something that students will encounter throughout their school experience. Practicing patterns are important for them to understand the concepts, especially for them to understand that the shapes can be the same, but the colors are different, or the colors can be different as well as the shapes. Creating their own patterns will help the teacher understand if they latch onto the concept.

Procedure:

  1. Introductory Activity: The lesson would be introduced in a whole group discussion about what the students know about patterns. The teacher would have already introduced basic patterns to the class using activities during circle time. They would understand AaBaAaBa. This activity would be introduced as a center for students to do. They will eventually get to the tablets and participate in the game. The teacher would say, “Today we are going to be working with our tablets to create patterns with flowers and leaves!”

  1. Step-by-Step: The teacher would divide up the groups into the tablet NatureCat group and the second center, which is a hands-on activity where students would make patterns with various, real flowers and leaves. This activity will also be briefly explained at the circle prior to being divided into groups. Once in the centers, students will be given a work sheet of what patterns to create. AaBaAaBa patterns are the first three sets in which the colors change, but the shape is consistent. The next two would be AaBbAaBb, in which both the color and the shape change. The last area would be for them to create their own pattern. Students would explore the tabs to get the correct pattern and create their own, the teacher would be present and observing. The students will only have room for three rows of pattern per screen, so after three rows have been complete, the students will be praised and told to move onto the next three. Once the whole group has completed the task, they can switch to the hands-on experience.

  1. Closure: The activity will be closed with a whole group share on the patterns that they made to showcase the students’ creativity. They can also discuss what other things can be done in the future with nature and patterning. NatureCat is to be utilized as an introduction for future activities.

  1. Adaptations: Students can be paired for this activity, especially those who show frustration with the activity. Partnering with another classmate will increase communication and understanding of the activity. The second activity that is hands-on for the students who are tactile. For auditory learners, they can have the sound on; NatureCat will tell them what brush they areusing, which will be needed because the materials will most likely be unheard of to them.

Evaluation: Since this activity is a center, the teacher will be present to be assess students. They will proceed every three rows and in order to move on, they will have to get the OK from the teacher to move on with the pattern game. If students do not get the patterns correct, the teacher will point out what row needs to be looked at further and they can keep attempting. In case students are moving too fast and do not get the OK from the teacher, they will be observed in small group, so the pattern successfulness will easily be tracked. Their created pattern will be assessed based on whatever they create. Either being where the shape is consistent, and color varies: AaBaAaBa or shape and color changes: AaBbAaBb
