Lesson Topic: The Water Cycle

Lesson Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the four main parts of the water cycle.

Students will be able to match vocabulary to demonstrate the ability to add proper information to create proper definitions.

Instructional Technique: Interactive Lecture

Instructional Materials: The Water Cycle Website, Guide Sheet, and Fill-In-The-Blank Worksheet (Both attached at the end)

Theoretical Perspective: It is important for students to understand how the world and the environment around them work, such as how clouds are formed and what happens to the water on earth. It is also beneficial for the students to know what causes certain weather patterns to occur such as rain, snow, hail, or sleet.

Procedure

A) Introductory Activity:
The teacher will ask students where they believe rain comes from. “How does water fall from the clouds? Where in the sky does it come from?” The students will come up with multiple different answers. Then the teacher will state “Did you know the rain that’s falling now can very possibly be the same rain that fell on dinosaurs years and years ago?!” Then the teacher will explain how water travels in a cycle and move on to the main activity to understand how the water cycle works.

B) Step By Step:
First, the teacher will instruct the students to go to the computers. Then, the teacher will pass out the combined guide sheet and worksheet for the assignment. The teacher will instruct the students how to log on to the computers by demonstrating it on the projector. The students will log on to the computer and wait for the teacher’s next instructions. The teacher will then demonstrate how to open the web browser, hopefully with the Water Cycle Link already set as a the home page, if not, the teacher will instruct the students to type in the URL found on their guide sheet. The teacher will then tell the students to continue following the guide sheet and raise their hands if they have any questions. The teacher will also walk around and check on student progress throughout the allotted time period.

C) Closure:
Once the students have handed in their Fill-In-The-Blank worksheets, the teacher will lead an activity that will allow the students to act out a water particle travelling through the water cycle, using different props to resemble each part of the cycle.

D) Adaptations for Different Learners:
If there is a student who has difficulty with writing for the Fill-In-The-Blank section, a scribe can be used to help the student complete the assignment.

Evaluation:

We will determine if we have met the objectives by assessing the Fill-In-Blank worksheets.

Objectives:

Completing the interactive lesson on the website and getting to the point of receiving the certificate will help us evaluate this goal, because you must be able to identify the parts of the water cycle to finish the lesson

This is evaluated through both the interactive lesson on the website where students have to match each step of the water cycle with the definition and through the fill-in-the-blank worksheet we created for them to understand the vocabulary.

Some concerns with this lesson would be the vocabulary that goes with the water cycle, for example some 2nd graders might have trouble understanding words like condensation, precipitation, or evaporation.

7) Follow Explorer Dan’s on screen instructions after you have completed the fill-in-the-blank for that section.

8) Raise your hand when you are finished and the teacher will help you print out your certificate.

**Raise your hand and stay in your seat if you have any questions**

FILL-IN-THE-BLANK

Greetings I am Explorer Dan and this is  my plane I use to explore and learn. After completing this course, you will be able to identify the 4 parts of the water cycle. They are evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection.

The sun heats up water in rivers and lakes and turns it into water vapor or steam. The water vapor leaves the river, lake, or ocean and goes into the air. This is called ____________________.

Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back to liquid form in the clouds. This is called _______________.

When clouds get heavy with water, they fall back to earth, in the form of rain, hail, snow, or sleet. This is called ______________.

is precipitation collected in oceans, rivers, lakes, and streams.

Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection together form the                                          .
