Living on Campus

Hello Champions!

I wanted to talk today about how living on campus has benefitted me as a student. The biggest benefit to living on campus is the commute to class. Instead of me driving 45 minutes to get to class, I leave 5 minutes before class starts and still get to class early. Instead of having to deal with traffic, I have a very quick walk. It’s great also when classes get canceled last minute, because sometimes that happens. Instead of having to turn around and drive home, I can just walk back to my room. It is very convenient.

On top of it being a convenience, it also has given me more opportunities. I am an RA on campus, so I actually get free housing because of it. Not only is the free housing a benefit, but I also get to do a job I enjoy. If I was living at home, I would not be able to have this job. It also makes it a lot easier for other jobs on campus, like working for SAIL, and also for dining. Instead of having to drive to a job, I can simply walk outside and walk to a different building to start work.

I have also been able to attend a lot more on campus activities because of living on campus. I have been able to meet a lot of people, and go to different events on campus. I also get to see my friends constantly. Instead of driving from my house to campus in order to see my friends, I can go up a staircase and get to see them. I am very thankful that during the school year, I can see my friends on a regular basis.

I am very people oriented. All of my jobs, and even my major is centered around people. Being on campus has helped me extremely in this aspect. I never have to be alone unless I really want to. Having so many things to do on campus plus having so many friends to see, I always feel like I have something to do.

Living on campus does not just have benefits for my social life, it also helps me with school work. I know that when I am at home, around my family, but more specifically around my dogs, I get no work accomplished. When I am in my room here on campus, I get into a zone and I am able to get the majority of my work done in one sitting. Living on campus has given me a space that I can focus on school work. Also, in the residence halls, there are also spaces outside of our rooms to study. In University Hall specifically, the study rooms are almost all windows, and something about the sun and the space lets me write a 5 page paper in half the time it normally takes me. Some people can’t do homework in close proximity to their beds because it makes them want to take a nap, so there are places in the halls for them to still get work done.

I honestly think I would not be in the place I am right now both socially and academically without having lived on campus. It has given me so many opportunities that I really would not have wanted to do it if I was commuting every day. Taking a commute time out of my day has given me more time to work on campus and also complete my school work. I have multiple on campus jobs because of the convenience I have while living on campus.

I hope that any of you that have students living on campus, will be able to have as great of a time as I have had living on campus. Especially if they are living in University Hall(since I am one of the RA’s in that building).

See you all soon!
