Sheltered English Immersion Endorsement through Westfield State University

Westfield State University offers SEI Endorsement in two ways. Please click on the following options:

2. District Endorsed SEI for Graduate Credits through WSU

Stand Alone Sheltered English Immersion

Westfield State University has been recently approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to offer endorsement for the full Sheltered English Immersion course.

3 graduate credits  - EDUC 0595-501 (CRN 21625)      Stand Alone SEI                 Thursdays, 4:30 - 6:33 p.m.                
   

Individuals may take this course in the following two ways:
1.  3-Graduate Credits - (EDUC 0595) Cost: $954
2. 45 PDPs  - (PDP 0499) - Cost: $500
*The course for PDPs meet the same dates and times as the course for 3-graduate credits.

Registration Information

Pre-requisites for Graduate Credits
Individuals interested enrolling in 3-graduate credits must have permission from the instructor. Please email Dr. Wilma Ortiz at fortiz@westfield.ma.edu with answers to the following questions:
1. What is your current licensure status?
2. Do you have access to ELL students in your classroom? If not, do you have access in the building for the required 10 hours of instructional time?
*Those enrolled in a Professional Licensure program at Westfield State University, may register without permission from the instructor.

Requirements for Successful Completion for the Stand Alone SEI Course

For those enrolled in the course for graduate credit, successful completion includes the following:

  • Completion of the inquiry paper assignment
  • SEI mini lesson plan document and presentation
  • Completion of the capstone project
  • A minimum of 10 hours with a second language student
  • B or better as a final grade in the course
  • Adherence to the attendance policy

For those enrolled in the course for PDP successful completion includes the following:

  • SEI mini lesson plan document and presentation
  • Completion of the capstone project
  • A minimum of 10 hours with a second language student
  • B or better as a final grade in the course
  • Adherence to the attendance policy

Attendance and Participation Policy
Because the course format depends heavily on class participation and student interaction, it is crucial that participants arrive on time for face-to-face classes and come prepared to discuss assigned course readings, having completed all preparation assignments due.

Attendance at all Face-to-Face sessions is required. If, however, a participant misses a face-to-face session, it is his/her responsibility to work with the course instructor to arrange for making up the session by either attending the same session in another section if possible or through another mutually agreed upon solution.

The SEI endorsement will be conferred upon completion of the course for those enrolled in EDUC 595: Stand Alone SEI Course.


District Endorsed Sheltered English Immersion Graduate Credit

Westfield State University is offering graduate credits to teachers taking the SEI endorsement course through their school districts.

Registration:

  • Please complete one of the following registration forms:

  • Please send your completed registration form along with payment to: Westfield State University, Attn: Brandon Fredette / DGCE, 577 Western Avenue PO Box 1630, Westfield, MA 01085.
  • DESE now requires written authorization from each student in order for Westfield State to request their grade. Please make sure to print your name, sign, and date the written authorization at the bottom of your registration form before submitting it.
  • Students are encouraged to submit a registration form as soon as possible. Although you can still submit your registration form after your class has begun, we must receive it before your class officially ends. Submissions received after this deadline cannot be accepted.

Cost and Payment:

  • The total cost is $125. This does not include the cost of a transcript (see below).
  • Payment is due at the time of registration. Your registration form will not be processed and you will not be eligible to receive credits until your payment is received.
  • Tuition waivers and vouchers are not accepted for these courses.

Withdrawal and Refund Policy:

  • Your payment for this class is non-refundable.
  • University policies surrounding withdrawals and refunds do not apply to the SEI Teacher’s Endorsement Courses due to student registration for graduate credits after the completion of the course. No refunds will be given for this course.

Grades & Transcript Requests:

Grades will be made available to students once Westfield State University receives an official grade report from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Students may request a transcript at any time, however please note your transcript may not be available until 1 week after grades have been reported to the University.

Grades will be not be available from DESE until approximately 5 weeks after the end of each SEI Endorsement course semester.  

Semester End Date WSU will request the grade on:
January 31, 2017 March 7, 2017
  • Students must receive a grade of B- (80.0%) or better in order to receive graduate credit from Westfield State University.
  • Pass/fail is not an option for this course.
  • To request a transcript, please fill out this form. Transcripts cost $2 for normal processing (2 – 4 business days), or $5 for 24-hour processing (if available). Checks and money orders are payable to Westfield State University.
  • The address to mail your request and payment is listed on the transcript request form under "Continuing Education/Graduate Students."
