Scholarships Offered by Westfield State

Merit scholarships at Westfield State University are offered to new, first-year students by the Office of Admission at the time of acceptance. Westfield State students are also invited to apply for scholarships offered through the Westfield State Foundation.

Presidential Merit Scholarships

These are university-funded merit-based grants that recognize the outstanding academic achievement of selected new first-year students at Westfield State University.  A limited number of Presidential Scholarships are awarded annually.  The award is $4000. First-year applicants who are Massachusetts residents and meet the following minimum criteria will be considered automatically:

  • Combined SAT-I score of 1270 or higher in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math; and
  • High school cumulative grade point average at the time of acceptance to the college of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Presidential Scholarships are renewable each year for a maximum of four years by maintaining a 3.30 cumulative average or by maintaining a 3.0 cumulative GPA with at least one Honors course completed per semester.


Tsongas Scholarships

These are state-funded merit-based grants that recognize the outstanding academic achievement of selected new first-year students at Westfield State University.  A limited number of Tsongas Scholarships are awarded annually.  First-year applicants who are Massachusetts residents and meet the following minimum criteria will be considered automatically. 

  • Combined SAT-I score of 1360 or higher in Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math; and
  • High school cumulative grade point average at the time of acceptance to the college of at least 4.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Tsongas scholarships, which equal the annual cost of tuition and fees, are renewable each year for a maximum of four years by maintaining a 3.30 cumulative average on a 4.0 scale.


Out-of-State Student Scholarship

For the first time, merit-based scholarships are available to out-of-state students

  • Scholarships will range from $1000 to $5000 per year
  • Completed applications must be submitted prior to December 1 to be considered
  • All completed applications will be reviewed automatically, there is no additional application needed
  • Students must have all required academic units and a 3.0 GPA (recalculated) to be considered
  • Students must have completed the FAFSA to qualify
  • Students who qualify for the New England Board of Higher Education Regional Student Proximity Tuition Rate are not eligible for this scholarship

The number of scholarships will be limited. Additional criteria for selection will depend on the quantity and quality of the pool of applicants.

Students must maintain a 2.75 GPA and be in good academic standing to retain the scholarship, and the scholarship will be limited to 8 successive semesters.
