Roderico Acevedo, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Westfield State University, has co-edited a new open educational resource (OER) book, Seeing the Invisible: Learning to Teach with Biomolecular Visualization.

Authored by more than seventeen members of the BioMolViz community and co-edited by Acevedo and Kristen Procko, this resource is designed to lower barriers for faculty seeking to incorporate molecular modeling and visualization into their teaching. The project was supported by funding from the National Science Foundation.

The book provides step-by-step guidance for performing essential tasks—including making selections, adjusting coloring, and

measuring interatomic distances—in four widely used molecular visualization programs: PyMOL, ChimeraX, Mol*, and iCn3D. It also features chapters on the importance of molecular visualization in education, strategies for improving accessibility (including alt text throughout), guidance on using the Protein Data Bank (PDB), and approaches for evaluating the quality of structural models.

Seeing the Invisible serves as a comprehensive resource for educators, students, and researchers, offering both practical tools and pedagogical insight to strengthen teaching and learning in the molecular sciences.
