The English Department gathered in the Loughman Living Room recently for their annual “Spring Gathering.” The event celebrates accomplishments from writers of various classes and levels for composition pieces. The Persona staff, who dedicates their time to the student literary body, also participated in the event in Scanlon Hall.

Several awards were presented to students of the English Department, including the Celeste M. Loughman, Barbara A. Welch, and Stephen J. Sossaman award, which were granted to Sadie Petta, Spencer Van Tassel, Madeleine Borowski, and Grace Templeton respectively. The student staff members of the Persona campus journal also announced that its yearly issue would be launching soon.

Opening remarks were presented by Dr. Glen Brewster, Chair of the English Department followed by acknowledgement of the first and second-year students who were recognized for their excellent prose.

As customary for the event, the gathering concluded with alumni speeches featuring an open dialogue related to the impact of Westfield State University on the community and how the English Department helps to prepare students for future careers.

This year’s speakers featured Joe Courchesne, class of 2012, and Olivia Torres, class of 2018. A brief question and answer session followed, where students and alumni discussed available resources for the campus body and how to access them.

The alumni also emphasized the importance of connections, with Courchesne highlighting the significance of artists in our communities, stating that Westfield State saved his life. Torres corroborated the sentiment during her address, citing her professors as huge sources of strength and inspiration.

“Westfield State feels like home. I’ll always be grateful for my time here.”
